Let’s Stop the Stigma

Let’s Stop the Stigma

12/06/24

There are a lot of things that people don’t understand about mental health and substance use. When someone doesn’t have a proper understanding, they tend to jump to incorrect conclusions. These opinions and assumptions often increase the use of harmful language known as stigma. This form of communication is a poor way to talk about an individual in recovery and it is harmful to their mental health.

Stigma is defined as negative beliefs and opinions. These opinions usually stem from misinformation. When talking about substance use, there is sometimes stigmatizing and harmful language used. For example, here are a few words that should be avoided.

-Addict

-Drug Abuser

-Junkie

-Drunk

Using these words to describe a person, does not separate the person from the disease they have. It is important to remember that addiction is not a choice, and the individual is not defined by it. Here are some alternative ways to speak in a more respectful manor.

-Person with opioid use disorder

-Patient

-Person in recovery or long-term recovery

-Person with alcohol use disorder

In order to change the conversation surrounding substance use and mental health, we need to continue educating the people around us. A simple change in dialogue can allow individuals to find the strength to ask for help without fear of judgment.
