The SMA Healthcare Foundation is pleased to announce the 24th Annual SMA Beach 5K and Sand & Sun Fest, hosted by the Ocean Deck, on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 10am.
The SMA Beach 5K (f/k/a BEACH House 5K), a chip-timed run/walk held on the beach outside the Ocean Deck Restaurant, located at 127 S. Ocean Avenue, Daytona Beach, is held annually to help raise funds to support BEACH House and other SMA Healthcare programs and services, as well as to provide awareness of SMA’s addiction and mental health services in our community.
Ocean Deck Restaurant began hosting the event in 2010, when Ken Bots, an avid runner and managing partner at the Ocean Deck, noted that the event needed a proper venue and partner to help build the run. They have continued their generous support ever since, not just providing the venue, but assisting with staffing, valet and parking, refreshments and event promotion. Ocean Deck also covers a portion of the cost for the custom designed “Florida Sea Life” medals that were introduced in 2018, and they donate a percentage of all sales the day of the run, up to 2:00 p.m., including food, drink and merchandise from the gift shop.
“We are very appreciative of the amazing support Ocean Deck provides, as well as all the sponsors, donors and volunteers who help make the event a success each year” said Jennifer Secor, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are also very excited to introduce this year’s finisher medal, the Sea Turtle, in the custom designed “Florida Sea Life” series. To add a little fun with the sea turtle theme this year, one of the Tortugas mascots will be joining us.”
The SMA Healthcare Foundation is also issuing a “5+5=10K Challenge”. Present a bib from an earlier race the day of the SMA Beach 5k, and receive a sneaker charm and entry into a special door prize drawing.
The SMA Beach 5K is supported by Run 4 a Cause and Chris Batista of 5K Race Director for race timing and equipment. Sponsors include Brown & Brown Insurance, James Moore & Co., FPL, Rosaria Upchurch Ph.D., TAG Ventures Real Estate, Mutual of Omaha, and Nature’s Garden-Orange City. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
Packet pick up opens at 8:00 am, and the run/walk starts promptly at 10:00 am. There will be a ceremony immediately following the run, and awards given for best overall male and female, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd by age group.
