Welcome to the Next Step Network, a group of organizations in St. Johns County committed to helping our community on the collective path toward hope, healing, and recovery in the wake of the opioid epidemic.

The goal of the Next Step Network is to create a safe space for St. Johns County have important conversations about opioid use in our community, reduce stigma, and connect those in need of help to the resources available in our community – free of judgement.

In 2022 alone, opioid overdoses claimed lives of 40 people in St. Johns County.​
Emergency responders were called to 256 opioid-related overdoses, administering Naloxone 514 times to save lives. Shockingly, there were 142,382 opioid prescriptions dispensed to 43,687 unique patients in the county. These statistics underscore the breadth of the crisis. 
 


The Opioid Epidemic Affects Everyone in St. Johns County Community​
The ripple effects of this epidemic are devastating and far-reaching. Families face emotional and financial strain, relationships are tested, and children may experience neglect or displacement.​
 


As a result of opioid use and abuse, overdose deaths and hospitalizations have increased, straining the local healthcare services and emergency responders. Drug dependence can lead to higher crime rates, including theft, drug trafficking and other criminal offenses. 
 


Additionally, the local economy suffers a loss of productivity as individuals struggle to maintain employment, engage in their communities, or show up for their families.​
Over time, entire communities can become overwhelmed by the consequences of addiction, leading to a loss of community trust.​
